Great Mosque of Kairouan in pictures.
Kairouan was the first major Arab-Muslim city in North Africa, and its Great Mosque, founded in the 7th century, is considered one of the most important in the Islamic world. The vast courtyard, massive square minaret, and forest of ancient columns in the prayer hall draw pilgrims and travelers alike. The historic city and its monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
