Roman cities and the surreal Saharan Tassili.
About Algeria
Algeria is a land of profound contrasts and immense scale, a North African giant that stretches from the sparkling turquoise waters of the Mediterranean to the deep, silent heart of the Sahara. As the largest country on the continent, it offers an untamed beauty that remains one of the world’s best-kept travel secrets. In the north, the history of empires is etched into the landscape, from the perfectly preserved Roman ruins of Timgad and Djémila to the labyrinthine Ottoman Casbah of Algiers, where narrow alleys whisper stories of resistance and revolution. However, it is the south that holds the country’s most surreal treasures. The Tassili n'Ajjer plateau, a 'forest of stone' rising from the desert floor, contains one of the most significant collections of prehistoric rock art on Earth, depicting a time when the Sahara was a lush savanna. Whether you are drinking mint tea with Tuareg nomads under a canopy of stars or exploring the elegant French-colonial boulevards of Oran, Algeria provides an authentic, raw, and deeply moving experience for the intrepid soul.
Best time to go
The best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when temperatures are mild in both the north and the Sahara. Winter is excellent for the desert, though nights can be freezing, while summer is best avoided due to extreme heat.
