Casbah of Algiers in pictures.
The Casbah is a UNESCO World Heritage citadel rising above the bay of Algiers, its steep alleys threading past Ottoman palaces, hidden courtyards and centuries-old mosques. Founded on the ruins of ancient Icosium, it preserves one of the finest surviving examples of an Islamic Maghrebi city. Wandering its tight passages feels like stepping back through layers of Berber, Ottoman and Mediterranean history.
