Natural wonder
In Cape Verde, West Africa
Pedra de Lume Salt Crater in pictures.
On Sal Island, the salt pans of Pedra de Lume lie inside the crater of an extinct volcano, reached through a tunnel cut into the rock. The hyper-saline turquoise pools let visitors float weightlessly like in the Dead Sea, surrounded by crystallised white salt and ochre crater walls. Once a thriving salt-mining operation, it is now one of Cape Verde's most unusual attractions.
